Most people have never seen a bedbug, and until recently, most people have never had a problem with bed bugs.
Although the Nursery Rhyme " Sleep tight, don't like the bed bugs bite" - is familiar to many people, we still don't expect to find bed bugs actually in our beds. Bed bugs have become a significant problem in Ireland and around the world. They are easy to spread and difficult to treat, resulting in a rapid growth in the number of bed bug outbreaks. Many people still associate bed bugs with public places such as hotels or cinemas, not realising they can be easily transported into your own home.
If you have bed bugs in your house, the only thing on your mind will be getting rid of them as quickly as possible. Bed bugs stay close to a food source, so are found where people tend to rest and sleep, hence the name bed bug. The frustration they can cause is not only due to the emotional stress of dealing with parasites, but also the irritation of their bites and the potential for secondary infection from constant scratching.
There has been a recent resurgence of bed bugs in homes biting people at night. It is widely thought that this is related to a global increase in international travel (bed bugs are known to travel in luggage or clothing).
Rentokil understand how distressing bed bugs can be, so call us and we'll get rid of your bed bug problem.
Bed bugs are small, crawling parasitic insects, which feed on warm blooded animals. Cimex lectularius is the bed bug, which feeds on blood from humans, giving us painful bites. Adults are circa 5mm long. Before feeding bed bugs are a flattened oval shape and light brown, but become rounder and darker after feeding - as they fill up on blood.
Bed bugs come out at night, attracted by the warmth of our bodies and the carbon dioxide in our breath. Which is why they are often found in places where people tend to sleep or rest, hence their name. They can also be found hiding in cracks and crevices during the day.
